Does it matter why we do good deeds?
Does our goodness have to be pure?
Or can our goodness come from self-serving reasons?
Do we have anything but self-serving reasons?
Isn't all we do self-serving?
If I give a street person a dollar or a dime, am I not doing that, even in the smallest way, to prove to myself that I am good?
Is there any act that is not in some way self-serving?
Even if I give up a kidney for a loved one, am I not getting some benefit?
So is there true goodness? Goodness that goes beyond any benefit we can reap?
Does it matter?
Probably not.
